FILM REVIEW: “PAST THE PAST”

Director Kody Newton introduces an interesting twist to the concept of time-travel in his genre-bending short film, “Past the Past.” The film follows Brad who loses his girlfriend, Towa, to a fatal accident. Upon this accident, Brad discovers his time-traveling abilities and must use them to save Towa.

The film brilliantly sets the tone as the first scene serves as the control for the rest of the film. What seems like standard dialogue soon plays as a double-entendre when we see Brad sent through the time loop. This clever screenwriting is showcased throughout as lines that are repeated via the time loop suddenly have another meaning given the context of Brad’s situation.

“Past the Past” also pulls on the heart strings as Brad’s condition worsens. While this film can make you laugh one second, it can make you cry the next. The film’s overall theme about desperately trying to fix one’s mishaps leaves you with an important life lesson that will stick with you even after the credits have rolled.
